A few things worth reading this weekend

Culture Shock
Masters of Scale

Reid Hoffman's (Co-Founder of LinkedIn) podcast, "Masters of Scale," is quite good. Episode 8, in which he interviews Reed Hastings (CEO of Netflix) about company culture, is particularly helpful. You can find the podcast on your favorite app or find the transcript above.

If Your Employees Don't Trust You, It's Up To You To Fix it
Harvard Business Review

Another facet of company culture: Leaders and managers must take initiative in building a trusting environment.

Journalese
The Economist

For not always legitimate reasons, ragging on journalists is vogue. But journalists could do better, and Johnson offers some fresh insights on how to do so. #3 will really surprise you.

The Human Cumulus
The Economist

This article lists a few ways in which Artificial Intelligence (AI) is creating new jobs as well as changing the way many people work. You may not like the results, but the easy story of robots wholesale destroying jobs isn't quite as neat in reality.

Passage I'm meditating on: Isaiah 9:6-7

"For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us;
And the government will rest on His shoulders;
And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace,
On the throne of David and over his kingdom,
To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness
From then on and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this." (NASB)

Yes, you've heard this sung a million times. But take a moment to really meditate on the wonderful blessings promised in these verses, especially in light of how poorly governments around the world can seem to operate. If you're not a Christian but are curious about why we would be excited about this, please shoot me an email on the contact page or take a look at this book!
